Rules
Home > About Us
1.1 No fighting or profanity! The person(s) involved will be asked to leave, and at the discretion of Race Officials.
1.2 Everyone must Read, Understand and “Sign-In” (Indemnity and Waiver Form) and obtain a Pit Pass during Race Times. PIT PASS MUST BE WORN ON PERSON AND VISIBLE AT ALL TIMES. (Minors are not to sign the “sign in” sheet, however Parents need to make them aware of all rules berfore racing. This is a LEGAL document and a child signing it is not acceptable for legal validity.)
1.3 Anyone under the age of 18 must have a minors release on file. Minor releases may ONLY be filled out by the legal parent or guardian. If the parent does not plan to attend with their child, they MUST PRINT the form from our website and BOTH parents must sign it and have it NOTARIZED.
1.4 No Alcohol allowed during the race program. It is allowed after the races are over.
1.5 Anyone called for rough driving will be sent to the pits. Two offenses in the same night could result in loss of any and all points for the race event. These calls will be made by the Race Director and/or Flag Man. In racing a driver will get bumped, nudged or outright slammed into on the track – but that does not necessarily constitute “Rough Driving” – see Code of Conduct for definition of “Spirt and Intent”. This call is to be determined by the Race Officials – NOT the parents.
1.6 Any conduct by children, parents, kart owners, pit crews, fans, etc. deemed inappropriate towards any race official and/or not complying with race official’s instructions will be penalized. If the situation is severe and person and/or entire team may be barred from the race and could potentially be banned from the track for the remainder of the season. Any discussion with any official or another team member(s) must be in a normal voice and manner. There will be consequences for bad actors.
1.7 Young children should be supervised and monitored at all times while on the premises.
1.8 Although the rules are comprehensive, they may not address every situation. These rules may be changed or altered for the enrichment of the sport and/or to promote fairness to all. Local promoting organizations and authorized sanctioning bodies may supplement these rules or guidelines. It is the responsiblity of the racers to obtain these supplemented rules when noted as some sanctioning bodies do not allow tracks to reprint them. (ie: AKRA)
1.9 KAM Kartway reserves the right to refuse service to anyone.
1.10 CRIMINAL ACTIONS: KAM is not responsible for any injuries or actions that result from criminal activity at or in the area of a KAM sanctioned event.
1.12 Reserved Pit Spots: Track management reserves the right to alter parking for special circumstances. Sometimes this is due to unavoidable circumstances and simply can’t be avoided but it is always in the best interest of the overall race day program.
Section 2 General Kart Rules for ALL Drivers
2.1 SAFETY
2.1.0 Headgear: Full-faced helmets designed for competitive motorsport use are required and must comply with the Snell helmet standards and current rating specs as outlined herin. The minimum rating required at KAM is the SA2020.
Helmets must be secured with a strap manufactured and fitted for the helmet. No exceptions. If the strap doesn’t work or renders the helmet to “not fit” the driver’s head, then that helmet may not be used at KAM. A full-face shield, integral with the helmet is mandatory. The shell must also be free from visible damage and/or cracks. Once a helmet has been damaged in a major wreck or neglect to the point of the shell cracking or having breakage, the helmet is compromised and no longer suited for its intended purpose.
2.1.1 Neck Braces: Collar-type, unaltered neck braces designed for motorsports use is mandatory in all flat kart classes. Loss of neck brace during the race event will cause a black flag to be given to the driver for the safety issue.
2.1.1 Head & Neck Restraint: A Head & Neck Restraint system is required for classes, except flat karts for all minors.
2.1.2 Driver Apparel: Gloves, socks, shoes and long pants (if wearing a jacket) are mandatory.
GLOVES ARE MANDATORY!
Racing shoes are recommended but not mandatory except for all Outlaw Classes.
2.1.3 At least a Single Layer Flame-retardant Race Suit with a minimum rating of SFI 3.2A is required for all classes except Young Guns and Pro Clone. Drivers in those classes may wear driving suites or jackets designed for motorsports and made of either leather, vinyl, or abrasion resistant nylon, or the equivalent. Flame-retardant or Flame-resistant material is however preferred for all race divisions.
Race Suits and Jackets must fit the driver properly with no exposed skin at the ankles or wrists due to suit being too small.
2.1.4 A Five-point harness and arm restraints are mandatory for all cage kart drivers and harness must be attached to the restraint system-lap belt and not over the steering shaft. They must be commercially manufactured for motorsports with.
Arm restraints must not allow the drivers hands or arms to protrude outside the cage when fully extended.
2.1.5 If driver’s hair extends below the helmet the driver must wear a head sock or balaclava to prevent the driver’s hair from extending below the helmet.
2.1.6 All personal safety equipment is subject to, and shall be made available for, pre-tech inspection.
2.1.7 Each Race Team will have a working fire extinguisher in their pit area that is at least 5 lbs. This is mandatory. Teams caught without a working fire extinguisher in their trailers or pit area will be subject to a $25 fine.
2.1.8 Front and Rear bumpers are mandatory and may not extend outside the tires.
2.1.9 All weights added to the kart must be painted white and have the kart owner’s race number on them. All weights must be double-nutted with locking nut on the outside, bolt drilled and clipped, or safety wired for security. No smaller than a 5/16 bolt should be used, and if weight comes off during the race, the kart owner may be subject to a $25 fine.
2.1.10 Raceceivers are mandatory for all divisions, except Young Guns.
2.2 Driver’s Meeting: All drivers must attend the mandatory drivers meeting. At least one supervising adult or crew member must accompany minor racers to the drivers meeting. NOTE: The Race Director may elect to start any driver who misses the drivers meeting at the rear of their heat(s).
2.3 Flags & Related Race Call Procedures
Disclaimer: It is the job of the Flagman to relay information regarding the status of the race/ track conditions to the drivers by waving the various race flags, and consequently it is the driver’s job to observe them. We do have track lights that the driver must also be aware of as well, and they are controlled by the Flagman. Corner/Track Staff will also wave yellow flags in event of caution. Parents/Crew are NOT to give hand signals or anything of that nature from the fence line. This is strictly forbidden as the drivers focus must be on the race and the race officials – not being distracted with inappropriate “Coaching” efforts by others.
2.3.1 Checkered Flag- final lap.
After passing the checkered flag the driver must take one more lap to slow to a moderate pace before exiting the track.
Top 3 finishers go to weigh-in, proceed slowly to the scales.
The kart finish order is final and are the official race result unless a kart is being docked for jumping a start, or passing under the cone on a restart, or is disqualified by black flag, or because of a post-race Tech (Rule) violation. No other post-race adjustments will be made, even if a race call/procedure was made in error.
2.3.2 White Flag – one lap to go in the race.
If there is a wreck after the white flag and the karts are safely out of the way and not posing a safety hazard or risk, the race will continue to the Checker flag ending the race. In a situation like that, the Flagman may waive the Yellow AND Checkered Flag together. Should a caution be necessary after White Flag is thrown, the race will finish with a Green, White, Checker or Green & White then Checker.
2.3.3 Red Flag – Stop immediately the race has been temporarily halted.
After slowing to safe stop, drivers will be instructed to proceed safely to turn 4. When directed, one team member may enter the track to re-start their driver’s kart. You may not make adjustments to the kart and will only be permitted to restart the motor.
If the red flag occurs at or prior to the halfway point, the race may be re-started. Restarts will be in the same order as the last completed and scored green flag lap prior to the Red Flag coming out.
If the red flag occurs after the halfway point, the race may be scored as a completed race and the results will reflect the last completed Green Flag lap. Karts involved in the red flag incident will be scored at the rear of the field. The officials will make every effort for the race to finish under green flag conditions; however, time and other conditions may require the race to be scored as completed.
2.3.4 Yellow Flag – track conditions are not safe, drivers to slow to pace lap speed and use caution.
There is danger on the course and there is a need for caution. When a Yellow Flag is displayed anywhere on the track, it signifies a full course caution.
Slow down and DO NOT RACE TO THE FINISH LINE ON A YELLOW FLAG. There is no passing under yellow flag. We aren’t scoring you under caution laps and the restart will be based on the last completed and scored lap.
Karts causing the caution and/or stopped on the track will restart in the rear, but before lapped karts. The “Lucky-Dog” rule applies and any/all lapped karts will be restarting on the ‘lead lap’ and no longer be counted a lap down (until or unless they get lapped again), and they will start at the rear afterthe kart(s) that caused caution.
Restart line ups are based on the last completed lap that was scored under full Green Flag lap conditions. Note: to be ‘completed’ more than 75% of karts must have crossed Finish Line.
The Orange Cone may be brought out for restarts and karts must stay in line until they pass the cone. Karts passing or driving under the cone will be docked a position for race results.
2.3.5 Green Flag – Starts the race and indicates the course is clear.
It is at the Flagman’s discretion when to throw the green flag to start the race! It is up to the drivers to be in their proper line-up spot and at correct speed according to Pole position driver’s speed when starting the race.
Karts cannot jump the start before the start line or before the orange cone on re-starts.
If a ‘No Start” occurs more than twice, front row may be placed back a row and/or the karts placed in single file order for next attempt to start race. The Flagman will make that call based on conditions, understanding and skill set of the class and/or time limitations.
2.3.6 Black Flag and “Rolled” Black Flag
Rolled and pointed means a “Warning” about driver conduct is being given. No penalty will be given to drivers for warnings but repeat offenses will result in full Black Flag and DQ penalty will be given.
Waved (open) Black Flag: Driver must exit the track immediately because you have been disqualified for a driving infraction, unsportsmanlike conduct, unsafe equipment, loss of safety apparel or some other mechanical issue. If a participant ignores the black flag and refuses to comply and exit the track, they are subject to disqualification for the event and no points will be awarded. Repeat offenders are subject to race suspension on future date(s).
Mechanical and/or Safety related Black Flags in a feature, driver will receive last place points according to finish order.
DISCLAIMER: The ages and class divisions of the drivers are treated differently based on driver status, skill sets acquired, race equipment handling, and racing comprehension and driver ability. We consider KAM Kartway to be a Driver Development Program for our young drivers in an effort to develop, train, and grow well-rounded and talented drivers for the next higher level of race competition.
Young Guns is our beginner and they will be assisted when needed to get in the proper line up and will have a standing start. As they progress during the season we may attempt rolling starts if we feel the drivers are capable as a group to do so.
The Jr 1 class will also be assisted in their line up starts and will have a slow rolling start. At the track’s discretion, a standing start may be opted for, especially at the start of a race season.
2.4 Pre-& Post Race Tech/Safety Inspection – KAM reserves the right to tech any part of the kart, engine, fuel or safety equipment at any time before or after a race or anytime during the course of an event.
2.4.1 The top 3 finishers in the feature must weigh in with kart and driver. Note: There are times when this is waived, but if you have not been signaled to exit the track, please head straight to the scales if you finished 1, 2 or 3. Failure to do so may result in being disqualified for that race and loss of points.
2.4.2 The Race Director (or his appointed Race Official/Tech) will decide how many karts, and for which classes, will be impounded for technical inspection after a Feature.
2.4.3 The designated Technical Director, with Race Director approval, will decide what and how much tech will be done in any given class.
2.4.4 Tech may be waived if the top five drivers (Parents in the case of minor drivers) unanimously consent and agree with race results as recorded by Score Keepers.
2.4.5 A DQ following Tech may be appealed. You have until noon the following Monday to provide documentation for your appeal. Use the official Appeal form to start this process. You may get a copy of this form from the Score Keeper or print it from the “Forms” page of the KAM Kartway website.
2.5 Other
2.5.1 No Radio Communication between driver and pit crew will be permitted while the driver is in the driving.
2.5.2 No mirrors on karts.
2.5.3 A drivers 1st time to race – will be required to start on the back for all races.
2.5.4 Kart teams are responsible for keeping their pit are free of trash, debris and dangerous obstacles. Please don’t leave trash on ground in your pit area after the races.
2.5.5 Being late and a miss draw: Driver will start on the back for both the heats. You must still stop at the registration desk and register.
Exception to this rule;
In the event a crew or team member is already at the track (or another parent, racer or track official volunteers to do it) they may register you or your driver if you are running late due to traffic or other unforeseen circumstances beyond your control.
They must Pay the full driver race fee and draw for the driver so that the lineup grids are not interrupted or posted late.
The races will not be held for late drivers however, and if you miss the first heat the driver will not be given points credit. They will still invert for the second heat based on their original line up order.
Phone calls or texts without payments and pill draw will not be accepted.
2.5.6 You must race the kart/motor you registered to receive points.
Exception to this rule
If your kart is damaged during hot laps or any heat, a backup car may be used to finish out the night, but the driver will start in the back of all remaining races (including Feature).
If you change motors at any time after hot laps, driver must start in back for remaining races.
2.5.7 If the skills do not meet the class standard of a driver to race in that given class, the Driver may be asked to race in a slower or less crowded class for safety reasons and a better learning environment. On the other hand, if the Driver’s skills exceed the class standard (ie: lapping the field, winning effortlessly racer after race, etc.) the driver will be asked to move up a class. The track reserves the right to modify the class age requirement based on Driver’s skill sets and racing ability.
2.5.8 Any driver racing a higher-level class in 3 or more events may not move back down to a slower level class. However, running two classes is permitted for experienced drivers as long as they are not more than a level apart in our Driver Development Program (Ladder System).
2.5.9 Classes may be added to the race program provided there are 4 or more karts registered to run. Classes may also be combined if fewer than 3 karts in any given class are registered and the classes/driver skill are comparable. Combined classes will be scored separately.
2.5.10 Substitute drivers are not permitted to race for points.
2.5.11 Tread tires only are required with Right Rear spec tire being a Hoosier D50 or Burris/QRC 50 or 55 and the RR must always durometer a minimum of 50 for all cage kart classes. Pro Clone (and all other flat kart classes) may run slicks.
2.5.12 Tire Prep, or “doping”, is allowed for classes (flat karts only) running slicks. Children under the age of 14 may not use, handle or apply the chemicals themselves.
2.6 Kart Numbers
2.6.1 All karts must have legible number. Flat karts must have numbers at least 6 inches in height affixed to both sides and the back of the kart. Cage & Outlaw karts must have at least 10” numbers on right and left side of wing as well as a back-number plate* attached with at least 6” numbers. Numbers should also be on body of kart should wing become damaged and/or removed. Numbers must be in contrasting colors.
When the score keepers can’t read your kart number it disrupts lap counting as they try to figure out your kart number and makes it possible to unintentionally miss other kart(s) or track position in the process. If we can’t read your number ~ that kart will simply not be scored.
* Numbers are required on the back of the kart so that other drivers know where to line up in the event of restarts.
2.6.2 All kart numbers must be registered with AND pre-approved by KAM Kartway on an annual basis. Two karts with the same number will not be allowed to race in the same class. A letter or number must be added to the kart number and letters must be at least half the size of the number when displayed on kart.
During a points season, a returning class veteran has first dibs on a kart number. Otherwise, numbers are approved on a first registered (1st come, 1st served) basis. To be fair, if 2 drivers register at the same time, both karts must add a letter/number to the number.
Special event races (non-points races) the kart numbers are assigned on a 1st registered basis, and any class duplicate number will be required to add a letter or number for the purpose of scoring and posting grids/line-ups.
2.6.3 Numbers may not exceed 3 digits/characters long and all letters should be half the size of the number when used in a combination.
2.6.4 The Head Score Judge will have final determination on the legibility of the numbers on any kart.
Section 3 – Points System
A-Main Feature Finishes
1st Place 100 2nd Place 95 3rd Place 90 4th Place 85

17th Place 20 18th Place 15 19 & beyond Place 10
3.1 Heat Winners will receive 5 points per heat.
3.2 When a B-Main is required, top 4 drivers from the B go on to race the A Main and collect the points based on the A-Main finish. The remaining B-Main drivers, based on their finish, receive points in line with the last place finisher of the A-Main. (Example: 12 Karts finish the A-Main the next finisher in line will receive 13th Place points and so on.)
3.3 You MUST BE A REGISTERED DRIVER TO RACE AT KAM AND COLLECT POINTS.
3.4 If you are disqualified for rules violation in the feature, the driver will not receive points. In the event that there is a “Drop” for the Points Series, a DQ Zero may NOT be dropped. The beginner classes (ie: Young Gun & Jr 1) will get last place points for Black Flag DQ since these are “learning” classes. EXCEPTION: If it a Black Flag was given for a mechanical or safety reason, the driver will get last place points.
3.5 All registered drivers who come to the track with a race ready kart, however due to mechanical issues cannot start the feature (DNS) will receive last place points less 15. Driver (or Parent) must inform Score Judge that they are scratching and reason must be approved to receive points.
3.6 If driver starts the feature but DNF (Did Not Finish) they will get points based on what lap they came out on with regard to the other racer(s) finishes.
3.7 Points will be cumulative through the entire series.
3.8 In the event of a rain out prior to completion of the heats being completed, all registered drivers will receive 95 points. If heat(s) have been completed, points will be based on the Feature Lineup Grid and awarded accordingly. Driver must be present, registered and race fees paid to receive points.
3.9 In the event of a series end tie in points, tie will be broken by the number of Feature wins – a second tie breaker will be based on the number of heat wins.
3.10 To qualify for end of series awards, driver must complete at least 60% of all scheduled points races and the class must have a race average of 3 karts or more for the series.
NOTE: If a driver receives enough points that puts them in a trophy position but doesn’t meet the attendance requirement – AND – if no one else is eligible or otherwise qualifies for the position, then they have the option to purchase the Championship Cup for the Year-End Awards Presentation. The cost of the cups are currently $50 to $85 depending on place size.
